Director Geetu Mohandas’ movie ‘Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups’ is one of the most awaited movies of the year. The length of the movie is more than three hours, but do these three+ hours really entertain and impress the audience? Let’s try to analyse it.
The movie centres on Raya (Yash), a mobster in Portuguese-ruled Goa prior to independence. Ganga (Nayanthara), his older sister, reared him after his mother killed his father when he was a toddler in the 1920s. Since 1947, Raya and Ganga have laboured for mobster Fernandez’s brother, Salvador (Darrell D’Silva), as retaliation for the killing of their father. Raya eventually develops into an infamous, brutal, and influential figure in the underground and starts dating Rebecca (Tara Sutaria), Salvador’s daughter. However, Salvador’s wife Elizabeth (Huma Qureshi) and her brother Tony (Akshay Oberoi) detest his increasing authority. Raya encounters popular circus performer Nadia (Kiara Advani) while visiting a circus, where she is threatened by assassins posing as clowns. The narrative advances to a new level. The story’s true core is its climax. Therefore, one needs to watch it to find out what occurs at the conclusion.
The main attraction of the film is actor Yash. His acting prowess has just amazed the audience. Most of the time, the audience is kept interested by his strong performance and intense banter. With their exceptional performances, other actors like Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria, etc. have also created an impression. In addition to them, performers like Darrell D’Silva, Akshay Oberoi, and Rukmini Vasanth have also defended their inclusion.
Action scenes and fight sequences are the strong point of the film. The high-octane action scenes impress the audience and compel them to stick to their chairs. Apart from action, the movie is also full of heavy dialogues that impress the audience and enhance the beauty of the film.
Despite a big cast, heavy budget, and action scenes, the movie fails on various parameters. The story and screenplay don’t really impress the audience. Many of the times, it makes the audience bored. In fact, despite all the good things, the poor storyline and loosely written screenplay make this film an average, or can say, below-average film.
Overall, despite a lot of positive aspects, the movie falls short in a number of areas and is only mediocre. However, you can still schedule a single viewing if you are an avid fan of actor Yash and action films.
