Amazon MGM Studios, and Excel Entertainment are bringing the first theatrical adaptation of one of India’s biggest and most loved OTT franchises, Mirzapur, to the big screen. Mirzapur: The Movie is set for a grand cinematic release in theatres on September 4, 2026.
One of India’s most iconic OTT franchises is all set to make its highly anticipated leap to the big screen with Mirzapur: The Movie, bringing its gritty and fan-favourite universe to cinemas on a much grander scale. The film has already emerged as one of the most anticipated releases of 2026.
Promising to take audiences back into its explosive world, Mirzapur: The Movie is expected to raise the stakes with bigger action sequences, fresh twists, intense conflicts, and a larger cinematic experience. Ahead of the film’s release, Divyenndu opened up about his excitement over returning as the beloved Munna Bhaiya.
Calling it ‘vintage’ Mirzapur and how the film is going to be massive on a larger cinematic scale, Divyenndu shared It’s going to be ‘vintage’ Mirzapur. We are coming all guns blazing. You’ll see the same characters as the first season, how they were. It’s a similar setting but in a different situation. Because it’s a film, it’s on a much bigger, cinematic canvas, and it’s truly for the fans.
Speaking about the immense love for Munna Bhaiya and stepping back into the iconic role, Divyenndu shared, “I still can’t fathom the love people have for Munna; sometimes you wonder if a character like that actually exists in a parallel world. Since my character died in season three, people were making these emotional reels with old Hindi songs asking him to come back.”
He added, “I really hope I can do justice to him all over again. There was a bit of a dichotomy in my head about whether I should play him completely fresh or copy what I did in season one, so I was a little shifty at the start.”
Reflecting on the enormous buzz around Mirzapur: The Movie and how it’s going to create history, Divyenndu said: Yes. It’s going to be a revolution in terms of revenue streaming; I think many people are eyeing this to see if it works so they can do the same (turn a series into a film). Just like the first time Mirzapur came out, and no one expected anything, I think the film is on its way to doing something historic.
