Esha Deol is a renowned Bollywood actress and the daughter of legendary actors Dharmendra and Hema Malini. She made her acting debut in “Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe” (2002) and made her presence felt in the industry. After that, she never looked back. She delights moviegoers with her outstanding performances in films such as “Dhoom”, “Dus”, “No Entry” etc. Due to marriage and other family responsibilities, she took a break but is once again back with “Rudra: The Edge of Darkness” web series with Ajay Devgn in 2022, followed by Sunil Shetty’s action thriller “Hunter, Tootega Nahi Todega” web series. In an exclusive interview with Yogesh Mishra, she spoke about her childhood days, her latest web series “Hunter,” if she wished to join politics, upcoming projects, and more..
“Hunter: Tootega Nahi Todega”, is your other action series. Any specific reason for choosing the action genre?
Well, whatever I did in the “Rudra” web series was different from Hunter. I played the role of the wife of the man who was doing the action. In the Hunter web series, I have done action scenes along with Anna (Sunil Shetty). So, I can say I have played different kinds of roles in these web series.
What character are you playing in the “Hunter Tootega Nahi Todega” web series?
Hunter is an action thriller. I’m playing the role of a small-town girl who comes to Mumbai from Ranchi and lives here as a freelance journalist.
Why should viewers watch the web series “Hunter Tootega Nahi Todega”?
Hunter is a good series, especially for fans of the action genre. Whatever songs are used during action scenes, they give off a nostalgic feel. It’s not just action, but there is a beautiful story behind it. It’s a very massy show, shot in a classy way . So, definitely, I would recommend people to watch it.
You are playing the role of a journalist in Hunter. Have you ever thought of making a career in journalism?
I didn’t think of being a journalist. I have written a book named ‘Amma Mia’, so I can say I have become a writer, but I never thought of being a journalist.
You have always been sporty and played at the national level. Then why did you change the path and turn towards an acting career?
I have devoted seven years to football sports. I competed at the district and state levels. I think, for girls, there was not much scope in the international championship. I never just thought of being a football champion; the acting was also my vision. Because I grew up in such a family, I’ve always wanted to be an actor. No doubt, football was also my hobby, and I was quite passionate about it.
You stopped playing football even after playing at the national level. What exactly moulded you towards acting?
I was selected for the national level, but I didn’t go. I hope you will not ask why (laughs).
When did you first realise you wanted to pursue a career in acting?
I didn’t realise it suddenly, but it happened gradually. Since childhood, I have lived a life where everything and everyone is related to films. I can say I have lived my life only in this world. I haven’t seen any other world except for Bollywood and school. For me, this was my world. That is why I am in this industry today. I love facing the camera and am quite passionate about films.
Out of your father and mother, who inspired you more to become an actress?
Of course both. My mother is a beautiful woman and a dancer, and my father is a handsome man and an action hero, so both are inspiring to me.
Despite being from a legendary actor’s family, your sister Ahana didn’t opt for acting as a career. Why so?
I won’t say that Ahana was never interested, but yes, she could not say yes to acting because of her shy nature. She is still interested, reads the scripts, and watches movies. She is so shy that she could not say yes to acting, I would say.
Your song “Dhoom Macha Le” was so popular that people started calling you “Dhoom Girl.” On the other side, your mother is known as a “Dream Girl”. So, what, according to you, are the reasons for making these titles too popular?
People still call me Dhoom Girl (smiles). My mother’s era was quite different. She was part of more than 200 films. She is a superstar. You can’t compare anyone to her.
Can you share any of your childhood incidents? How much did being a star kid matter?
In my school days, I didn’t get any special treatment for being a star kid. No one was bothered about who I was. There wasn’t much paparazzi or media coverage at the time to highlight it. Our upbringing was very normal.
Apart from actors, your family has also given three MPs (Member of Parliament) to the country. Do you have any plans to join politics?
I admire the work they are doing. My mother is working hard and passionately for Mathura. I am happy that they are doing well, but I admire them only from a distance.
What is the current status of your upcoming film ‘Main’ with actor Amit Sadh?
We are currently shooting for the film.
Any message for the readers of “Bollywood Town”?
It’s great having a conversation with Bollywood Town. My reason for being back to work is that this is a good time and great projects are being made. One of the greatest projects is definitely “Hunter” which has been released on Amazon Mini TV, so please watch it.
