Abhay Verma, a rising star in Bollywood, hails from Panipat, Haryana. He gained widespread recognition with Maddock Films’ blockbuster MUNJYA, followed by his standout performance in Dharma Productions’ Ae Watan Mere Watan alongside Sara Ali Khan. Abhay shocked audiences with his remarkable portrayal of a transgender character in Sandeep Singh’s Safed, further cementing his acting prowess. In an exclusive interview with Yogesh Mishra, Abhay opens up about his childhood, his journey to Bollywood, his challenging roles, and his future plans.

How were your childhood days? Any memorable incidents?

I grew up in Panipat, Haryana, and I wasn’t a particularly good student. My real interest was in arts and cultural activities, especially acting. I was quite the naughty boy, but my family always showered me with love and support.

When you feel low, whom do you miss the most?

Whenever I feel down or get hurt, I miss my mom the most. Her presence and comfort have always been a source of strength for me.

When did you first realize you should pursue acting in Bollywood?

I’ve been passionate about acting ever since I was a child. Watching movies made me realize this is the path I wanted to follow.

Who is your inspiration in Bollywood?

I can’t pick just one. I admire many actors, and I’ve learned something from each of them. There are at least ten different qualities from different stars that I can identify with.

Was there a specific movie that inspired you to take up acting as a career?

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela was a major turning point for me. It sparked my desire to join Bollywood. Later, Tamasha also had a huge impact, and I knew then that acting was my true calling.

Star or actor-which is the journey you plan to pursue?

What matters is the role I play. I always strive to give my best, no matter the character, and to justify it on screen.

Amitabh Bachchan continues to amaze audiences even today. Your thoughts?

If acting is a temple, then Amitabh Bachchan is nothing short of a god. His dedication, versatility, and legacy are unmatched.

After a blockbuster like Munjya, actors often become choosy about roles. Your thoughts?

Choosing roles is a luxury that comes later in an actor’s career. I believe in the process—evaluating each opportunity to see if I can truly do justice to the role. For me, it’s not about being selective; it’s about the commitment to the craft.

How did you land the role in Munjya?

I went through the regular audition process. I firmly believe in taking the standard route. Based on my performance and fitment for the role, I was selected for Munjya.

Your performance in Safed was outstanding, and the role was very challenging. How did you approach such a tough role?

Playing a transgender character in Safed was definitely a challenge. But I decided to take it on because, as an actor, roles like these don’t come around often. I saw it as an opportunity to push my boundaries and showcase something truly unique.

When Producer/Director Sandeep ji (Sandeep Singh) approached you for the role of a transgender in Safed, what was your initial reaction?

My first instinct was to say no, but Sandeep Sir convinced me otherwise. Over time, I realized the importance of portraying such a complex character and embraced the challenge wholeheartedly.

Were there any other roles offered to you in Safed?

No, “Chandi” was the only role offered to me, which I accepted.

Did your performance in Safed impact your selection for Munjya?

Although Munjya happened after Safed, I have no idea if it played a role in my selection. I believe most people saw Safed post-Munjya, but still can’t say anything on that.

What’s next after Munjya?

I believe in keeping things under wraps, but expect some surprises soon. I have a few exciting projects lined up for release in 2025.

Any message for the readers of Bollywood Town?

It’s still early in my career, but if I can make it from a small town in Haryana, then anyone can. So, never lose hope and always chase your dreams!
