Famous for her roles in television series such as Chashme Baddoor, Abhimaan, Ghar Ek Mandir, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Muskaan, Sasural Simar Ka 2, and Doree, actress Moon Banerrjee is keen to try out new genres, particularly romance, which she feels she hasn’t had a chance to delve into completely yet.
“I want to do more projects in the romantic genre, which I haven’t explored much,” she says. Referencing the indie short film Once Again, Moon expresses her interest in similar nuanced and heartfelt stories. However, she believes the entertainment industry tends to typecast actors, making it difficult for performers to break out of established molds.
“If I am playing a positive role of a mother, then I fall in that box, and for someone to get me out of that box needs courage. Makers don’t want to risk that,” Moon explains, acknowledging the industry’s hesitancy to experiment and the lack of risk-taking among producers.
She also highlights the evolving space of comedy in Indian cinema and television. “With Stree and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, we are getting into the horror-comedy zone a lot more,” she notes. Yet, she feels there’s still a gap when it comes to creating strong romantic comedies or impactful comedic narratives. “There are very few romcoms or hard-hitting comedy movies and someone has to take that plunge and not worry about the set formula.”
When it comes to her personal viewing preferences, Moon is a fan of good content regardless of the genre. “I like to watch good content; genre doesn’t really matter. Like I just saw Adolescence on Netflix, and I was spellbound. I really wish that we make such content,” she adds.
