Ulka Gupta is known for portraying the young Rani Lakshmibai in the popular TV series Jhansi Ki Rani. Apart from that, she has done multiple projects, but The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond gave her a new identity in the film industry. Audiences and film critics alike admired her role in that film. In an exclusive interview with Yogesh Mishra, she spoke about her character in her latest movie, “Rajni Ki Baraat,” the reason why she said yes to this film, her emotional connect with this story, and more.
How did you get connected to the team “Rajni Ki Baraat”?
Producer Tanaayaa Ji called me; in fact, I got a call from Vidyadhar Ji, with whom I have done a short film; he called me prior. He actually connected me with Tanaayaa ji. I liked the film the moment I came to know about my character in it.
What exactly excited you to say yes to this film?
Actually, this story is based in Darbhanga (Bihar), on a Mithila girl. So, I had no other thought because I too belong to Mithila only. I was born there but brought up in Mumbai. Rather than a career-oriented decision, it was more like an emotional decision for me. People in media always asked me what I had done, Hindi films, Telugu, Marathi, and even Bengali films, but never any of the films in my mother tongue. This was the old complaint of my well-wishers and fans, but I think this is the film through which I can give a tribute to Bihar. So, this was more like an emotional decision.
You used to speak multiple languages and even did a variety of films & series like Jhansi Ki Rani and The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond. How do you manage all these?
I think it’s my passion. I have a hobby of learning multiple languages. The biggest kick I get is like when people saw “The Kerala Story 2”: one of the Malayali audience asked me about my village in Kerala. I said, “Actually, I am from Bihar.” He did not believe that I belong to Bihar. Although film is in the Hindi language, every region has its own flavour within the language.
Tell us something about your role in this film?
I am playing the role of Rajni, who is a next-door girl type. She belongs to the Mithila region in Bihar. She faces such situations in life that she becomes much older and more mature than her real age.
