When it comes to fashion on the big screen, few films command the same legacy as The Devil Wears Prada. From razor-sharp silhouettes and impeccably tailored suits to coveted luxury labels and those unforgettable red stilettos, every frame is a masterclass in style. However, it wasn’t a bed roses for the team.
In a recent, much-talked-about conversation with Karan Johar, Anne Hathaway revealed a startling anecdote about the first film. During the conversation, Hathaway opened up about the unexpected challenges the team faces while making The Devil Wear Prada (2006). She said, “When the first film happened, it’s not like designers were beating down the doors to give us things, actually, it was quite the opposite. We had a lot of houses withholding. Valentino, of course, was the very exception.”
Costume Designer Molly Rogers had shared a similar tale in a recent chat. “Now when I tell them that I am working on The Devil Wears Prada 2, they (fashion houses) fall all over themselves because this is great, incredible, best in the world placement. In the new movie, expect a mix of high and low ensembles,” she said.
At the heart of the film’s fashion narrative is the return of the formidable Miranda Priestly. Her wardrobe once again sets the tone—bold, directional, and culturally influential. Among the standout moments is a custom Balenciaga gown created for a Met Gala sequence, envisioned as a true one-of-a-kind piece. In a deliberate creative decision, Priestly’s signature look embraces a bold evolution — this time in red. As Rogers says, she and Meryl knew that “The devil had to come back in red.”
Andy Sachs, portrayed by Hathaway, also returns with a distinctly evolved aesthetic. Now more worldly and self-assured, her wardrobe reflects a life shaped by experience. “She’s travelled a lot,” Rogers explains, “That involved a combination of things like contemporary clothes, and throw in some pieces of vintage, which gives it another interesting layer as a reporter.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunites the original cast with director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna, while introducing a new lineup of characters played by Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B. J. Novak, and Conrad Ricamora. Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman also reprise their roles as Lily and Irv from the original film.
20th Century Studios India will release The Devil Wears Prada 2 in cinemas on 1 May 2026.
