Director Rahat Shah Kazmi’s Love in Vietnam is one of the romantic dramas of the year, starring Shantanu Maheshwari and Avneet Kaur in the lead.
The story revolves around Manav (Shantanu Maheshwari), a Punjab-based boy fond of singing, and his marriage was fixed in childhood only with Simmi (Avneet Kaur). Manav lost his father in childhood, so his big daddy (Raj Babbar) takes care of him. Looking at his carelessness in studies, his big daddy decides to send Manav to Vietnam to study the new ways of farming. Now Manav had no choice but to go to Vietnam, but his would-be wife Simmi also went with him for a few days. After reaching Vietnam, Manav falls in love with a girl, Linh (Kha Ngan), whom he saw in a portrait. He goes out of his way to meet her and luckily meets her. After many attempts, finally Linh starts liking him, and both come into physical relation as well. Regretting such an act of physical relations, Linh suddenly decides to disappear from the life of Manav. Now Manav becomes mad at her search. After eight years of his madness in searching for Linh, Manav leaves the hope, and due to family pressure, he agrees to marry Simmi. Just a few days back of his marriage, Linh suddenly comes into his life. Climax is the real crux of the story. So, to know what happens at the end, one must watch it.
Actors Shantanu Maheshwari has done his best, but the poor story and screenplay could not do overall justice to the film. Actress Avneet Kaur has justified her part and impressed the audience with her performance. Another actress, Kha Ngan, is the real attraction of the film. Her innocent onscreen look pleases the audience. Although she had only a few dialogues that too were fully in English, she still managed her part and did full justice to it. Apart from them, other artists like Raj Babbar, Gulshan Grover, and Farida Jalal have also made their presence felt.
Vietnam is beautifully showcased in the film. Cinematography is really good and quite appreciable. Direction is to the extent good but the poor storyline and slow screenplay actually disappointed the audience. The too much predictable story and slow pace actually keep the audience bored. It seems that the same story could have been made in much better way.
Overall, this is one of the below-average movies with hardly any twists and turns that could have held the attention of the audience. If you wish to see Vietnam on a big screen and like the actors Shantanu Maheshwari and Avneet Kaur, then you can think of watching it once.
