Raai Lakshmi is one of the most popular South Indian film actress. Last year she tried her luck in Hindi film industry as well with Julie2 but she could not get the success here. She is confident and sure that the equation will change with a couple of more movies in Bollywood. Prior to Julie2 she has worked in 49 south Indian films. In an exclusive interview with Yogesh Mishra, she spoke about her debut in Bollywood, working experience with South Indian film industry, hobbies and more…
Can you define yourself in one line?
Difficult. Let's just say I am an ordinary blessed girl living a not-so-ordinary life! Blessed!
How did you get your first break in film industry?
I won a teen beauty pageant while I was still living in Karnataka. There was an article about this in the newspaper. Tamil industry director Udaykumar sir read this article and approached me for a movie. The rest is history! Imagine. 1st contest, 1st article and I land up doing my 1st movie. like I said, BLESSED!
After spending almost a decade in South Indian film industry you thought of working with Bollywood (Hindi Film Industry) as well. How did you get your Bollywood debut film Julie-2?
Well, as an artist you always want to explore new mediums to reach out. South Indian cinema is my lifeline. I am everything because of my loyal fans here! Bollywood is also beautiful. I have a house in Mumbai and live there a lot. I have a lot of friends in Bollywood industry too but the best part is that once again it was through my good friend Meher (from south Indian cinema) that made me meet Julie2 director. Julie2 was my 50th film so for that reason alone it will be a special film to me.
You have tasted success in South Indian film industry but you could not repeat the same history in Bollywood. Why so?
Hahaha .. I have 49 films backing me up in South Indian film industry, and just 1 movie in Bollywood. That wasn't a blockbuster hit. Give it some time..! An actor’s instant success is correlated with the movies success. I am sure the equation will change with a couple of movies more in Bollywood.
Do you have any further plans to do more Hindi films?
Yes of course, why not! It's a lovely industry with lovely people just like our industry here. I simply enjoy working and wherever work takes me, I will go! My heart will always be in south, but my mind needs a little distraction too, right? (Laughs).
As per your experience what are the major differences between Bollywood & South Indian film industry?
Bollywood is still a little scattered when it comes to their unions, south cinema is very strong in this manner! Technicians are wonderful everywhere! Also somehow our movies here more or less finish in the stipulated time that is decided. Bollywood movies can get stretched a lot. As the dates get revised a lot. Which isn't a bad thing. It's just a different approach of filming! That's all.
What are your hobbies?
I like to travel and see new places and try new cuisines. So as a hobby I like to collect memorabilia wherever I go. And love dancing.
Who is your favourite film star and why?
I have many but right at the top of my list is Amitabh ji, Chiranjeevi Garu and Ajit Sir. Why? Because not only is their body of work extraordinary but even their lifestyle and real life characters are exemplary! I am in awe of them.
What are your future plans?
My past, present & future plans always remain the same. Work hard, travel a little and eat a lot! (Laughs).
